Renters Insurance Information
The Basics of Renters Insurance
Renters insurance is a type of insurance designed for people who rent, as opposed to own their living space. Renters insurance may include personal property coverage (for damage to items you keep in your rented apartment/home) as well as liability coverage (for injuries to people that come into your rented apartment/home). Renters insurance is also known as Tenants insurance or apartment insurance.
Why Is Renters Insurance Important?
You need renters insurance to cover you if any of your furniture, electronics, books, or other belongings get damaged or destroyed. Renters insurance also covers you in the event that someone else is injured in your apartment or someone’s personal property is damaged and sues you.
What to Discuss with Your Agent
Before buying Renters Insurance, be prepared to discuss the following with your independent insurance agent:
- The dollar amount of your personal property at the rented location?
- How long do you plan on staying at that location?
- If you need to temporarily relocate, do you have budget to do so?
- Deductibles that will apply before the Renters Insurance policy pays a claim.
- The procedure for filing a claim.
- The insurance provider’s reputation for customer service and ability to pay claims.
